Yes. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange S&P 500 Index Futures trade from 5PM until 8:15AM (Chicago Time) on the Globex electornic trading system. This is how the big hedge funds cover themselves when news hits and the NYSE is not open. Since these settle in cash against the calculated value of the index, the nearest future goes up or down depending on where the big dealers think the market will open.

NO, not really, but you can sometimes get a "feel" for it from looking at the Asian and European markets. I track ^N225, ^HSIm and ^GDAXI in Yahoo finance, just for information.
