It could be the computer sending a signal to the printer to verify it is still there and online (they do that every so often) the printer will check the carriage and that could be the "clicking" you hear.

That's your hard drive. Either it's running and doing a random read for some reason, or if it's louder than normal, it may be an indication of your drive going bad.
