The brake lamp, and there may be more than one, coming on may indicate a number of problems. Generally, if the fluid is low in the reservoir and this triggers the lamp, it would most likely be that the front or rear brake pads are worn and are in need of, at the least, an inspection and probably replacement. The lamp may also come on if the brake lamp switch, located under the brake pedal/emergency brake handle, may be sticking and it (the switch) needs replacement. If the ABS (anti-lock brake system) lamp illuminates, it means that this system's computer has detected a fault and is alerting you to this. Your ABS may or may not be operating, but be assured that your regular brake system will still operate.
You need to check out these possibilities to determine the exact cause of the lamps lighting up.
Hope this helps.

Some vehicles have a low fluid warning light. On most U.S. cars the brake light indicates that the parking brake pedal is depressed or that there is an imbalance between the front and rear brake fluid pressures. Check fluid level under the hood. If low,,look for signs of leakage! Be careful out there! ;-)=

Make, model and year of car would be useful.
The majority of cars the brake light comes on when the brake fluid is low. So odds are for some reason the fluid level is low in your brake resevoir. One possible cause for the low brake fluid level in the resevoir is your brake pads need to be replaced. Another possibility is you've got a leak and you're losing brake fluid (could potentially be very dangerous).
Either reason, I would recommend getting your brakes inspected by a professional. If you simply want the light to go off, filling the brake fluid resevoir should do it (for the majority of make and models), but you maybe masking another issue.

The brake light usually indicates low fluid. However, on a more complex system, it could mean a sensor failure or something more critical.
Take the car to a good mechanic. Brakes are a vital vehicle safety component.

Well as others stated above if your pads are worn your fluid will look low when you check it, so technicly the light will come on because your fluid is low but it will probably be low because your pads are worn down...go check it out, you need those brakes
