Like the guy said above, various reasons contributed to Rome's fall.

The Roman legions of the late empire were just as formidable in comparison to the early Republic or Legions of Caesar. The latter day legions had many 'civilized' barbarians among them. A standing army like the early Republic or the professional Imperial army during Caesar's time were equal to the late Roman army, even with the 'barbarization'.

But why were such barbarian groups in the Empire in the first place? The direct cause was not the loss of the battle of Adrianople in 378, but the failure after this to destroy the Goths who were in the Empire. After their settlement in 382, the external threats did not diminish, but the Goths created an additional internal threat.

The second major problem was the loss of Africa to the Vandals, which reduced the financial basis of the western empire. Without money to pay for troops, the military capacity of the west decreased, though the eastern empire remained intact. Loss of territory and financial crises, not a failure in military effectiveness, led to the sack of Rome and collapse of the Roman West ....

No one knows ALL the reasons, or putting it another way, various reasons have been put forward at differing times. The reason which appears to be favourite at the present is an economic one. The Empire just grew too big to be managed properly. It became increasingly difficult to collect taxation/tribute, particularly in the form of grain. This was especially true when barbarian invasions of North Africa cut off the sullies from that important 'bread basket, following the closure of the port of Carthage. The legions could not be paid. They became less inclined to fight barbarians became increasingly brave. A good recent book is 'The Fall of the Roman Empire' by Peter Heather.

Gibbons "Fall of the Roman empire" remain a masterpiece for explaining all...
Rememeber we speak of the fall of the "Western " roman Empire, as the "Easter" roman empire, Byzantine, survived up to 1204 (Fall of Costantinople to latin crusaders... with many of my city ;) ) or 1453 (Costantinople falls into the hands of Otman turks, and this is usually consedered the official end of Byzantine empire).
For making it short and easy :
1) Roman empire was too big , too complicate, with too many laws.
2) Roman Empire was no more a "Democratic" or even "Aristocratic" state, but was "Monocratic" everything came from the emperor, if he was good, could be a stop to decadence, but at the end mostly were bad ones...
3) Too heavy taxation , but without the relative services. At a certtain point taxation was so heavy, in fron to no security and few public services, that for many so called "Barbarians" were the minor problem.....
4) Demographic decrease.. Not enough men to work the land and for defence... Barbarians were, especially at beginning, welcome, as they were more arms for working the land. Let's remember much of Roman economy was based on slave work, and slaves ame from conquest and wars. When conquest stopped, slaves became more xpensive.....

Lets also notice that , apart Vandals , other barbarian Kingdome were not so worse than the Roman Empire of the last years. On the contrary Theodoricus in Italy was a good king.
