I have had the same tube of mascara for many years and wore it Friday the 14th for the first time in a long time. Today part of my eyelid is puffy and itchy.

Did I get infected by mites? I know we all have mites, but I didn't think it was anything to worry about long as you didn't share - which I didn't.

What should I do? Is there anything that can be done, or will it most likely clear up in a few days?

You can't use the same tube for many years. Mascara should be replaced at least every three months. What happened is that bacteria had built over those years. Even though you didn't share your mascara with anyone else, your bacterias gotten into the tube. When you keep that tube for that long it'll built up and that's what probably happen.

Any of your make-up should be replaced because of bacteria that goes for your make-up brushes too.

Especially mascara or any other cosmetics, once you have open them up don't keep them for long for bacteria Will grow on it. The most once I've open a new mascara even if i don;t use them often, I will dispose of them after 3 months. As for your case, its due to the bacteria in the mascara and since you applied it on your eye which is very sensitive this is bound to happen. It will clear up in a few days. But best to see a doctor to get some cream to apply cos you said its itchy and if you scratch them it might make them worse. Take care and best of luck.

you should replace your mascara every three months, or it well get funky and bacteria can grow in it. i dont know if you can get a swollen eye from it...but it is possible. It should clear up in a few days like you said though. Just go out and buy some new mascara.

Old makeup such as mascara DOES have a shelf life.
I wouldn't worry about mites, but molds and other such icky things can grow in the container and contaminate your mascara. This applies to any non-powder makeup.

Throw it away immediately!

I had the same kind of thing, resulting from bacteria getting in my eye. It started with puffiness, then a lot of itching, then a sty, then another... That was at least two years ago and my eyes are still bothering me. Go to the eye doctor ASAP and tell him what happened. I didn't go until three styes developed. They're gone now thanks to my doctor, but I still have itching. Hopefully you'll take care of your eyes better than I do mine! Good luck.

You should change your eyeliner every 2 months, and your mascara every 3 months. If not, you will get clumps, and it will make your eyes infected, and make your eyelashes clumpy and ugly.

don't wear any make-up until it heals up, try washing it with a sterile eyewash once a day, and bin any make-up you've had more than 3 months and never share make-up either
