The rate of pay for footballers is irrelevant, it's how they perform that counts.I don't blame anyone for taking money for entertainment if people are prepared to pay it. Personally I wouldn't. When I used to watch Manchester United in the 1960's it cost me a shilling to get in (5p) and I used to watch the great Busby Babes. In those days £10 a week was a good wage so in today's values it cost me the equivalent of about £1.50 to see a match. Now it's about £35 so they can stick it. I have met several players over the years, most of them real gentlemen and Jimmy's £20 soon multiplied when he went for the money and left for Italy. Don't forget £20 was the maximum they could get until Jimmy Hill and the Player's Union went on strike and got it overturned. Johnny Haynes was the first £100 a week footballer followed by Denis Law and Jimmy Greaves. That was in 1961 so like £2,500 a week now.

By the way, nobody bothers too much when singers like Barbra Streisand asks for, and gets £5,000,000 for a one hour performance.

I think you'll find he took his £20 and went straight down the pub and I'm surprised £20 was enough

Didn't he tell you how to spell his name ? but yes you are right, football is all about money and not passion these days. Look at today's Chelsea team, what a bunch of overpaid foreign wankers. I stopped watching it years ago.
