$5 - it was all I had

2007-09-17 04:41:18 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 3 1

Nope. I had no money. I did direct them to the soup kitchen.
I still have little money, and eat at a soup kitchen myself often. I'm still trying to get work. I've been homeless, I've been an alcoholic. I've found myself on the streets. On the other hand, I've come out of a long period of mental illness and alcoholism and my life is changing much for the better.

In general, you might find that most homeless are alcoholic, addicts, mentally ill and such, though anyone can become homeless for a time. The difference is that for those capable of, and willing to work, there is a much better chance of not remaining homeless.

Even better than merely offering food or money, how many have shared their warm home on a rainy or cold night. How many of you realize that even in the winter in Northern New England, there are homeless; people living outside in tents, under bridges, in abandoned barns and such?

How many of you are the sort who will call the police to remove the homeless from a near-by field because it might diminish your property value? How many respond to the homeless out of fear? Do you try to have the "vagrants" removed from parks? Do you think that simply not having things makes you a bad person? Do you think that all homeless are criminals?

Do you realize that some homeless people will commit crimes simply because jail is a warm place with food and a bed? Do you support your homeless shelters?

Just wondering.

I always want to, but I never have cash when I see them, or else I'm not driving and can't the driver to stop. I saw a guy yesterday practically accost a truck in the left lane as he was pulling out from a stoplight... The last time I gave money to someone was about a month ago, when I saw a woman outside of Starbucks, so I went in and paid for my drink with a $20 and gave her the change.
I always wish I could do more for people than just give them money, but I just don't know how one would go about doing that on an individual basis.
Good question.

The last time was about a month ago with my brother. We gave him all the change we had.
I never give them anything when I'm buy myself. I've wheard stories of women holding out money or whatever and the homeless person grabbing their wrists and attacking them. My hearts in the right place, but its just not safe.

Everytime I go to Toronto, I carry loonies in my pockets. I NEVER open my purse to get money, that is dangerous. If I see a homeless person on the street as I walk into McDonalds or something, I'll get an extra burger or happy meal for them. I would much rather give them food than money. Not to stereotype, but many of them will just buy booze. Which is why I am iffy about giving money to those sitting by the LCBO or Beer Stores. I prefer to give them food.

I try not to judge them based on what society says about them because I just don't know what their story is. I feel that I can live without another Big Mac so why not make someone's day.

I'm a sucker for animals. Some of them have cats around them because they know people like me will give more...and I do hehe

I dunno maybe I'm just selfish in that I do selfless deeds to make myself feel better.

Not the last time....I didn't.
However about 2 years ago I had made myself a sandwich and grabbed a yogurt out of the fridge to eat on the run. I saw a man that I often saw walking the streets of my neighborhood. I had thought the next time I see him I'm going to give him some food....so I pulled my car over and gave him my sandwich and my yogurt. I figured he needed it more than me. I never give money to anyone that asks, but he had never asked for anything nor had I ever seen him approach anyone.

Yeah, the last homeless person I walked passed was about a week ago, and I gave him a dollar. I don't give them food because sometimes they have the nerve to be picky!

This will sound crude but it is the truth.
Yesterday as I was planning on entering a "gentlemans club", I saw a person outside of Mcdonalds who looked so terrible.
Rather than spend the $120 at the naked bar, I decided to give him $80 and went home.
I figured that even if he spent it on drugs or booze, or even naked women like I was planning to... he probably needed it alot more than me.

What is maybe weird too is that giving him those $80 felt alot better than spending $120 at a naked bar ever has.

Lol a lot of people don't realize that some of these homeless people make more than some of you making minimum wage, go ahead look it up, do some research! Besides... for all those new homes being built, they need people to hold those signs directing the location of them. Isn't that the perfect job for the homeless! I mean they do the same thing essentially! Plus they might even be able to combine the two...

Oh and I have in the past giving money, but usually not.

I drove by, stopped and brought a burger and fries, came back and gave it to them. Giving money is nice, but the might just opt to buy a few cans of beer (I would if I was homeless, just me). Chow

No, I never give directly to the homeless. It may sound harsh but I prefer to give to various, creditable local shelters. Too often the ones asking for money are the ones that are more likely to misuse any donations.
