I am a Police officer and on the SWAT team...so you know my stance on guns. I own plenty from pistols to rifles. I have no children...yet...but still keep them locked up at all times.I have a loaded 9mm in my nightstand drawer...which is locked.I live in a not so nice area and have given my girlfriend a small handgun aswell. She works 2nd shift at the hospital and there have been 5 acts towards nurses in the parking lot after dark recently.I patrol the area alot but can not always be there.I feel alott better knowing she has the ability to protect herself if needed. She is well trained and very mature about having one...which is a must for anybody owning a handgun. Its not a fact of people should have them rather...are the trained and mature about it

I like guns, frankly. I used to target practice many years ago.
But they must be respected. They are not toys. They can cause someone to be seriously hurt or killed, and hence, a heavy responsibility falls upon the wielder of the gun.
That is great that you know how to use one. And it's okay and even commendable that you want to protect your family. Good for you!
It's even better still that your step children are mature enough to know how to properly use guns, and are intelligent enough to not play with them irresponsibly.
You are not wrong at all for wanting to have a safe place to live and sleep. You deserve that- and if having a gun gives you peace of mind, there is nothing wrong with that.
I agree to some extent that guns are a necessary 'evil.'
But like my dear grandpa said once- may he rest in peace- "I would rather be tried by twelve than carried by six."

No you are not wrong at all. You have the right to defend yourself plus it's constitutional as well I believe the second amendment which is the right to bear arms. Plus your kids are old enough to know right from wrong and you are well trained with guns and it's not as if you are roaming the streets flashing your gun at people simply because you have one and feel like doing so. In fact I wish I had a gun myself. It's not safe anymore as there are too many people who are doing too many bad things and endangering people's lives just by their mere existence and their I don't care I can do whatever I want to do attitude.

I have several guns in the house, but no ammunition. I buy it on the way to the range. I have a sledgehammer and machete for taking care of business in the house if I have to.
I'm a sick puppy who would rather make my attacker suffer more. A 12 pound sledge to the chest would probiably explode the heart and lungs nicely.
Gun control is crap, I wish more murderers would start killing people with Wesley Snipes DVD's; Get those off the streets.

You should never feel you are wrong for wanting to protect yourself or your children. I was raised in a home with guns available to me at a very young age. I was taught how to shoot at 5, and also taught the respect to have for the gun when handling it.
To the woman who was a police officer, I'm sorry that your children had to witness that occurrence, that is a shame, I've been around a few shootings and they are nothing like most people would think they are. Thank you for your service.

Gun are for hunting / wild game meat.
Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
Respect goes a long way and if we band all the guns, then what are we going to do when the time does come?
If a person really wants to harm or kill another, they are going to get a gun with or without a piece of paper to stop them.
Before controling the gun laws, controll the problem, which stems back to the person with intent to harm or kill at their hands.
And lastly anything can be used as a weapon, even your bare hands! Should we band raising our hands to .....?
Get my view's eye.
For all it's worth, take it from a person who has seen both sides of this law. My opinion and only one opinion.
Thank you.
Canada (rifles used of hunting for food, never wasted or shot what we couldn't eat or give away)

Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
This is a half truth, which means a lie.
Guns don't kill people all by themselves, people who are killed by guns are killed by people with guns. This is the more accurate statement.
When you go into a rage and you have no weapon or just a knife, between the time the rage begins and the time the rage subsides, you have time to attack only someone within close range of you, and that person has the opportunity to defend himself or herself or otherwise slow you down and put you off, or just talk you down, until your rage subsides and you come to your senses. It is unlikely that you will kill someone while you are enraged and unarmed or armed with only a knife.
If you go into a rage and there is a gun within reach before the rage subsides, you can now wound, wound and send into shock, or mortally wound people you can see - near or far; and people you can't see - who happen to be in the line of fire. This is possible because you are holding a "point and shoot" device which was designed for the sole purpose of killing a human being by sending a metal projectile in a straight (more or less) line at an extremely high speed.
All you have to do is look at the world around you to realize that the only reason there are so many gun related crimes in the US is because there is virtually unlimited access to handguns and now, automatic and semiautomatic weapons. Handguns and automatic and semiautomatic weapons are not hunters' weapons, they are killers weapons. As long as Weapons Dealers insist on their rights to distribute these weapons designed to kill humans (not deer), the Gun manufacturers are in the wrong, and bear partial responsibility for the deaths these weapons cause.
Having said all that, what is the purpose of the 2nd Amendment?
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
We have both an Army for foreign conflicts and a National Guard for domestic conflicts. A well regulated militia consisting of a volunteer citizen force, providing its own weapons and ammunition, is no longer necessary to the security of a free state.
However, the real reason for the second ammendment, sad to say, still exists perhaps more than ever.
The framers of the constitution didn't trust authority. They didn't trust the executive branch to be able to weild power abroad, and so they made it unconstitutional for the president to declare war - only congress can declare war. They also didn't trust the strong arms of the executive branch, the military and the police, to weild power without abusing the rights of citizens. To protect citizens from soldiers and police officers who might enter private homes unlawfully, the constitution was ammended to allow citizens to bear arms, in order to be able to protect themselves from and deter soldiers and police from abusing their authority.
If a police officer enters your house without a warrant you should shoot him dead, he doesn't belong there and since he is armed, it is probably you or him anyway. And if you only wound him, be sure to finish the job, or else you will really be in trouble. But do this with your 30-06 or your 12 gauge. don't be a puzzy with a glock.
But don't own a gun of any kind unless you are willing to learn how to care for it, handle it, store it and use it properly. Otherwise you are simply inviting a criminal to kill you with your own gun. And when you die that way, St Peter won't let you into heaven. The Big Guy says that level of stupidity carries a mandatory hell sentence. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.00.

You keep your legal firearms and pay no attention at all. I wonder if these people whom lecture you also lecture people of how irresponsible it is to have children they can not afford to provide care for....I doubt it.
Not only are you not wrong I do hope you run into that rapist, I reckon he wouldn't rape again would he.
Live free, live with the peace of mind knowing You can protect you and your loved ones. I respect the police and the work they do, that being said there are thousands of violent crimes committed each year. Being armed greatly reduces your probability of being a victim.

No you're not wrong. Some people are just stupid with their thinking, "No one has the right to kill another" or something like that. Fact is, if they're trying to kill you, you have as much right to kill them before they do so.
It's obvious guns aren't the best things to create peace... but in a world like this you need all the protection you can get.
Still, I wouldn't roam on the streets with guns like some boys do. It's best to keep it in your house, but on the streets you can always run and besides you shouldn't be at places where you're at risk.

I don't believe there is anything wrong with owning a gun for protection. I have one myself and will use it if necessary to protect myself. People will find anything to complain about. I was eating a turkey sandwich and diet soda the other day and got a lecture on how bad meat is and the diet soda as well. Could you imagine what this "extreme" liberal would have said if they knew I owned a gun as well? LOL! People should just mind their own business.
