There is only one method used to classify minerals: the anion in the mineral (Dana's System of Mineralogy). Please note that silicates are the largest group of minerals, even though they are listed last.
-Native elements (have one element with no anion)
-Sulfides (including Sulfarsenides, Arsenides, Sulfosalts)
-Oxides
-Hydroxides
-Halides
-Carbonates
-Nitrates
-Borates
-Phosphates
-Sulfates
-Tungstates
-Silicates
