hi, im doing an addition to my home, and right behind my home is a driveway thats about 4 inches thick and its on the same level as the BOTTOM of my existing home foundation. the driveway is as wide as exactly half of my house, but my addition will be the size of my existing house(i put gravel on the other half which dosent contain the driveway, and its on the same level as the driveway). so i was wondering instead of tearing out my exisiting driveway and putting in gravel, could i just lay the new home foundation on top of it, the driveway is very thick and it has rebar, it also has no cracks.

thanks for the help guys, i was just wondering how much would it cost to remove the slab, its about 12 feet wide and 23 feet long? or would it be better to just remove the concrete in the areas where the footing will go and leave the rest of the drive wayin there?(this pic illustration will help : )

I would ask a builder who has had experience with this sort of thing. To be absolutely sure of course, the drive way should be taken out, and the foundation put in from scratch. These driveways can buckle many years after being put in. Be a shame to build the addition to the home and then have to take it out again.

First any foundation requires a footer all the way around depth and thickness regulated by local building codes, any part of the drive that interferes with the footer has to be removed. Then any part of the drive that interferes with plumbing has to be removed/trenched(if any). The rest of it can stay providing it doesn't interfer with the height of the finished slab and it's at least 4 inches thick, use a moisture barrier under the new slab I cant see any problem with it check with your local code dept. They may not allow it.

The short answer to your question is no. You driveway is not rated for that size load. You can probably leave most of it and just replace the area that will act as a foundation wall, but you need to have an engineer take a look at it. Some foundations distribute weight across the pad so they need to be poured together.

Removing a driveway is pretty cheap, so don't skimp there.

the best bet is to remove the slab. Rent a backhoe. Start with a required footer and foundation. You'll be happier later.

No I would do it as you have drawn up.
I'm sorry I didn't read you question correctly. I would leave the drive way and use as a patio or for parking.
Good luck

Check with your local Building Code office. I doubt you will be able to do what you are asking.
