I'll be going to September 24-27. I don't know where I want to go, that's why I'm looking for ideas. I'm planning on moving up there in the fall of 2008, so I want to get an idea of what the different areas are like.

Maine is a big state. Helpful to know where you will be in Maine and what you might be interested in?

Get a lobster roll. Get a Flo's special hot dog at Flo's hot dog stand on Rt 1 Cape Neddick Maine (near York). Have some full bellied fried clams at a roadside clam shack.

Keep in mind that summer business ends in Maine on Labor Day weekend. You will likely encounter lots of things that are shut down or running on limited staff due to the drop in tourists after labor day. The good news is that the traffic will be minimal.

Generally speaking Maine is a place to go to relax and unwind. The touristy places would be Ogunquit, York, Kennebunkport, Portland's Old Port area, Freeport (LL Bean) - this is southern Maine. Places like Boothbay Harbor will be virtually boarded up after Labor Day - go further up the coast at your own risk.

Ogunquit is a popular summer destination. There is the Ogunquit playhouse which is a small community theater that gets some pretty well known actors during the summer. Lots of good restaurants in the Ogonquit area - Arrows being probably the best restaurant in Maine. Ogunquit is popular with the gay crowd.

York is known for it's beaches. Small downtown area with shops, Goldenrod's store, which features an old fashion taffy pulling machine, the York Zoo.

Kennebunkport, also known for it's beaches. Has a touristy shopping area, more good restaurants, White Barn Inn being the close second to Arrows for best in the state. George Bush's Walker's Point home located on Ocean Ave. Drink with the locals at the Arundel Warf restaurant/bar.

Between Kennebunkport and Portland there isn't much, for a tourist. Portland Head Light, located in S. Portland is probably the most famous lighthouse in area. Portland's Old Port is an historic part of town located just up from the water front. Lots of bars, restaurants and shops. Popular with the 20 somethings.

In Freeport is the mecca of outlet shopping and location of the main LL Bean store. Open 24x7 364 days a year (closed for Xmas).

You could go to any of the lakes - Sebago or Moosehead being the largest. lot's of hiking, fishing, take a canoe trip...

I'm not sure of the spelling, but when I went there as a child, my family used to always walk on the Marginal Way. It's a really long walk, but it's really nice. I don't think this is going to be too helpful. I was really young when I went there. I love New England though. Especially Cape Cod, Mass.
