The song's history began with Lennon writing a song for Timothy Leary's failed gubernatorial campaign in California against Ronald Reagan, one which promptly ended when Leary was sent to prison for possession of marijuana. It was transformed by Lennon into a track with digs at McCartney and Harrison interspersed alongside tales of his Bagism movement with wife Yoko Ono. It was the subject of a lawsuit brought against Lennon by Chuck Berry's music publisher, Morris Levy, due to the fact that one line in "Come Together" closely resembled a line of Berry's You Can't Catch Me: (i.e. The Beatles' "Here come ol' flattop, he come groovin' up slowly" vs. Berry's "Here come up flattop, he was groovin' up with me"). After settling out of court, Lennon promised to record other songs owned by Levy, all of which were released on Lennon's 1975 album Rock 'n' Roll.

Lennon played rhythm guitar in addition to singing the vocal. Each exclamation of 'shoot' one hears during the opening bass line is actually 'shoot me', although 'shoot' is immediately followed by a handclap which drowns out the word 'me'. Also, at approximately 2:17 in the song, Lennon can be heard shouting something indiscernible, though it is very faint. (It sounds like "come!")

Two prevalent theories abound.

1. Campaign song written For Timothy Leary whose campaign slogan was to be "Come Together." He asked the Beatles to write a song that his supporters could sing along the campaign trail.

2. Lot of rumors at the time about the hidden meanings in the Beatles songs. So they just wrote a song full of non-sensical lyrics so people would speculate about all the "hidden meanings." (And sell more records so people could buy it and listen to it to find the real meaning.)

Since people were always trying to find the meaning of the Beatles' lyrics, John would deliberately write strange lyrics which meant nothing - and then watch with amusement as people attempted to figure out what the song was about. "I Am the Walrus" is one example of this. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if that was John's intent for this song as well.

Timothy Leary was a psychologist who became famous for experimenting with LSD as a way to promote social interaction and raise consciousness. Leary did many experiments on volunteers and himself and felt the drug had many positive qualities if taken correctly. When the government cracked down on LSD, Leary's experiments were stopped and he was arrested on drug charges. In 1969, Leary decided to run for Governor of California, and asked John Lennon to write a song for him. "Come Together, Join The Party" was Leary's campaign slogan (a reference to the drug culture he supported) and was the original title of the song. Leary never had much of a campaign, but the slogan gave Lennon the idea for this song.

I interpret the Bible or any piece of literature for that matter, in a way that makes sense to me, without trying to pick and choose. I am saying that I have the authority to do so, but as an individual, it works for me and only me.

Basically what everyone is saying , Timothy_Leary was running for California governor & "come together" was his campaign slogan. It inspired John Lennon to write this song.

It`s just John putting together some words as he liked to do which in it`s ensemble is totally meaningless...it was also a tribute to Chuck Berry!
