The story has been made into a movie at least 6 times starting in 1910. This early version appears from time to time on Japanese television.
The movie was remade in 1941, the title is "The 47 Ronin"
The 1962 version, Chushingura - Hana no maki yuki no maki
is the most popular version in the western world.
The story was made into a tv series called "Swords of Vengence" in 1978.
Also it was used to make 2006 film Hana yori mo naho.

It was also the inspiration for the Robert Dinero film "Ronin"

The Story of the 47 Loyal Ronin

"Ronin" ~ A "Masterless" Samurai

Among flowers, the cherry blossom;

Among men, the samurai.

Japanese proverb.

During the Japanese Shogun period, if a feudal lord ("daimyo") lost his fiefdom,
his samurai retainers became displaced, "masterless".

This is the story of Lord Asano, and how 47 of his samurai retainers,
led by the brave Oishi, demonstrated the ultimate loyalty...
with their lives.

It presents a classic example of the warrior code of Bushido...they defended the honour of the Lord by murdering the man who had him killed/executed, then died with honour afterwards through seppuku/hara-kiri
