Every winter we have an outrageous gas bill. AND I can't stand being on the budget plan and paying over $300/month in the summer months when we don't even use heat. I'm considering using a kerosene heater in main living area of the house so we don't have to turn up the gas heat so high. Are they dangerous/unsafe?

Used in moderation with someone present eliminates the danger factor. If the odor and the hassle of filling and messing with them isn't a concern, and if the fumes that may discolor the ciling aren;t a big problem, you can certainly lower your over all fuel bill; but Kerosene isn't all that cheap, and hauling it in and out is a pain for some people.

Put in a ventless gas heater.

They dont cost much more, than a kerosene heater to purchase, but you get a much higher quality heat from gas.

As an aside, the gas heater is far safer than the kerosene heater.

.well i own a indoor/out door. i also lucked out and found a bunch of kerosene on the cheap. My heater suggested to open a window about 1/4 of an inch. My heater heated up the garage well(with no insulation and detached). I say yea,but it's really up to you. they also make a product that you add to kerosene so it won't smell as bad

Kerosene heaters are a bad thing in the living areas.... The fumes are toxic and stink bad... You can get a ventless gas fireplace they put out some good heat

I have used them (mostly for power outages) and find they work fine as long as you are careful and follow a couple rules. Don't leave unattended or when you go to bed. Make sure pets will not knock them over. Open a window a small amount to have an air source since they use the room air for combustion. I always take them outside to extinguish. This seems to be when most of the black smoke and smell occur. Do not refill a hot unit.

NAY! They are dangerous because you hear of so many houses burning down in the news in the winter.
You might want to try an electrical portable heater with an automatic shut off if it falls over.

Nay- They stink but as mentioned, the worse danger is the carbon monoxide. My sister was found unconscious in her home. Thank God someone happened by that day,she lives alone.
