First of all, you need to take a deep breath and calm down. Being overly distraught will make it harder and take longer (easy to say, I know!) You will know when to push for several reasons, one because your body will tell you and you will have the urge to push. Secondly, you will know because the doctor will tell you to push. You will want to push all the way through each contraction. As the head comes through, they will probably tell you to not push through one as your vagina stretches out hoping to prevent you from tearing. It's all downhill from there! Does it hurt? I can only imagine. Thank goodness for epidurals!

Relax! I assume you will be in the hospital? If so, your nurse will be your best friend. Ask her ALL of your questions. Write them down before you get there if you can't remember them all. She will (should) tell you everything that will happen before or as it happens.
1. After you are dilated to 10cm, you push with each contraction until the baby is delivered. That is simple :) That is your goal...to get the baby OUT!
2. It does hurt. It hurts ALOT. If you are prepared ahead of time and have practiced relaxation and are ready to endure the pain of labor, go for it. If you are scared and freak out...I might suggest considering an epidural. It will be worth it for you.
3. Try reading about labor and your options on the Internet before you go to the hospital. The more you know, the better you will do. Ask many questions!
4. Take a deep breath, relax and Good Luck!
I wanted to comment on the answer that said it was dangerous to get an epidural because you get it in your spinal cord. That is not accurate. The catheter is placed below your spinal cord into the epidural SPACE. The procedure it very safe. It is done many many times in every hospital every day. Read up on it so you are not worried about it. MANY WOMEN DO NOT GET IT BECAUSE THEY ARE MISINFORMED. IT IS A SHAME. If you don't WANT it...fine. But, usually, they are scared of it--for no reason.

Are u going 2 deliver ur baby at home or hospital??Well I dont have a baby yet but my mom told me that if u do everything natural it hurts when the baby comes out of the vagina. Usually doctors ask u what kind of delivery u want n there is this shot they give u so that way u dont feel the pain but its a lil danger b/c u get in ur spinal cord. It comes all natural. Nothing 2 worry--cant wait 2 be a mommy myself. Good Luck n everything will be fine--u gonna be a good mommy.

Usually, your cervix dilates completely, allowing for the baby. According to my wife, the cramping is the most painful, which takes your mind off the expansion of the birth canal. Also, most places use a nerve block of some kind to alleviate the pain.

You will push for as long as the dr. tell's u to push! It does not hurt when the baby is coming out, its more like a relief. The strange thing is as soon as they place your baby on your stomache immed. after birth, you forget the pain. I promise. Good luck, and try not to stress about it, K?
