1. Click on START button, the click on RUN
2. Enter REGEDIT and press enter
3. When REGEDIT starts, open up the following folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:
"Upperfilters"
"Lowerfilters"
Click on each of them, press DELETE and click YES.

Then close REGEDIT, shutdown & restart your PC

You need to find out if it's a software or a hardware problem. First, re-boot (if you haven't tried that already).
Assuming it's Windows...
If the drive is not registering your CD, and right-clicking and selecting 'explore" doesn't let you explore the files, it's probably the CD drive that's kaputt or the connection between the CD drive and the CPU. If you feel comfortable looking inside the computer, you could check the CD drive's connections are properly home in their sockets.

If you can see the CD files, the drive is probably OK. You could try doing a system restore: (Start/ Accessories/ System/ System Restore) which is a bit drastic as you will lose anything you haven't saved up to the restore point (it's like sending your computer back in time); or re-loading your Windows disks (which means you'll have to dowload all the Windows updates again). But if the CD doesn't display its files, I think you might need a new drive.
