Yes, there is a general decline in American democratic values and principles and redemption can come by electing the correct people. It would help if we could have campaign finance reform in order to take all that money out of the Presidential races. I'm afraid money and power have replaced values and principles in this country.

The short answer: yes, and to redeem would take a huge overhaul of our current economic system (in my opinion).

Income has not kept up with inflation. The middle class worker is slowly being phased out to the point where he earns enough money to keep himself alive (not even talking about those with families and kids to take care of). Rising energy and food costs are eating away at the earning power of the middle class worker.

As a result, middle class worker is spending more time to earn money and thus, has little amount of time to deal with issues such as politics. Even with families that have two incomes, its very difficult to make ends meet (look at the housing market. Very few people would qualify for loans at the current prices if the exotic loans were outright banned). There are also a lot more distractions compared to before (movies, internet, television, video games).

The younger generation has also become less involved in politics. As a person who just graduated through college, I find it very difficult to find people who actually know what's going on in the world. When talking to people my age, I can find out more about clubs. celebrities, and alcohol than I can about who's running for president in the next election.

I feel the best solution is to return to sound monetary principles. If you limit credit cards, student loans (aka easy money) people will find it more in their interest to pay attention to what's going on around them and around the world. There will be a more conscious effort to vote and to participate in politics. If the earning power of the middle class is returned, there might be a chance to reverse the declining trend and put America back on track to the great country it used to be.

Yes and the best way to redeem it is go back to our beginning as a country when the members off congress put their very life and liberty on the line for a United America.
Our present congress puts self and party above the good of the people, ego, greed and power corrupt from the top on down to the streets. The shame falls on us if we continue to reelect the same old so called leaders.

No, there is not a decline in democratic values. There is a moral decline in government that is slowly sorting itself out, but it mirrors a national moral decline that is also sorting itself out.
