I want to travel by car from L.A to San Francisco via the costal route. Does anyone know how long it will take and any decent places to stop?

We have done this journey many times and I never fail to be blown away by the beautiful scenery. Yes, all the places mentioned are superb. We have stayed in Carmel, Monterey and Big Sur. I would agree that Hearst Castle is a MUST - truly amazing place. Loved Santa Barbara too - lunch on the pier overlooking the ocean - called Longboards if I remember rightly. How long it takes really depends - if you want to relax and really enjoy all the different places on route then you need to take your time and plan on spending a least 3 nights before you reach LA. However, if you are in a hurry.....
Good places to stay for a night are Carmel (highly recommended), Monterey and Santa Barbara.

If you take Pacific Coast Highway all the way up along the coast, it should take about 10 hours or so. Some places to stop along the way might be: Malibu, Santa Barbara, Solvang (definitely), Monterrey, Big Sur.

Highway 1, along the shoreline will take considerly longer, since it is a curvy two lane road for many miles. You may wish to stop at Carmel, Monterrey and at the coastal redwoods park.
