a colony, regardless if it's white, black or red. In the insect world, we use the Collective Noun "colony" especially for termites, ants, bees, etc.

If you found Red or Black Ants on decaying wood and picked up the wood, the mass of little white looking bodies underneath are (Isoptera) Termites, which often co-exist with Ants (Hymenoptera). Both are different orders. If it is a nest of Ants, the ants will proceed to immediately carry the pupae away from danger. They will look like rice kernels but much smaller.
