In the wild, is it the usual fate of animals such as zebra, giraffe, antelope or deer to end their days being killed and eaten by lions, etc?

Actually 100%. Some are hunted down, others eaten by scavangers after they die of some other cause.

All the African grazing animals are prey animals pretty much except for the Elephants/Cape Water Buffalo or Hippo. The other animals are predators/scavengers in the chain of life. It is extremely difficult to kill the above 3 named animals because they have good defense systems, attack in groups, and defend their members, especially the youngest/oldest, as a group.
