The college I go to is one of the cheapest tuition-wise in my state, and most of the student body consists of middle-aged people who go there to continue their education (don't get me wrong, it's a great school with great professors; just not very expensive). I take night classes there and I was under the assumption that my school knew about all of these older students who have children/grandchildren, hence my thinking that there wouldn't be any classes the night of Halloween since it's really a very family oriented holiday. However, when I looked at my syllabus a moment ago, I realized that my professors have lessons planned for that night!
Honestly, I don't think that's very fair. Do the people at my school really think their students would rather sit in on a boring lecture than Trick-or-Treat with their children?!? I know there are sacrifices one has to make when it comes to continuing their education, but that's asking a little much IMO. What do you think?

As a matter of clarification: I’m 21 and have no children of my own, but I am a very family oriented person and I’d much rather spend the holiday with my family. Even if it IS just one of those holidays that don’t really count, it’s still a pretty big deal to me. I’m thinking of just skipping my classes that night.

I can understand working that day. And Halloween IS a holiday. But NIGHTTIME is when Halloween is celebrated! Why have school that night?!?

Geez, people! If Halloween isn't a holiday, why is it marked on the calendar and why is it in the "Holidays" category?!? St. Patrick's Day is a holiday! Valentine's Day is a holiday! HALLOWEEN IS A HOLIDAY!

As another matter of clarification: It's not that I thought we'd get it off like Christmas or Thanksgiving or another federal holiday. But I have had professors in the past who would choose to give us that night off out of the kindness of their hearts. I wasn't thinking we should have the entire day off, I just couldn't believe my professors would make us come in that night!

My mother teaches night classes and she gives everyone the night off, usually with the caveat of a paper or project they have to complete that week. This way she can get away with it... and she said she never would expect half the class to come that day anyway.

Tell your prof you won't be able to go that night and ask for the homework ahead of time.

You should do nothing on the night of halloween related to work or study. It IS a holiday but celebrated during the night time so people don't get time off work. If you are expected to study on that night it is daft.

You can protest all you want. Halloween is not a holiday. Personally I never understood why people take their children door to door begging for food from strangers, I'd much rather be at a party where kids can play games in their costumes. Anyway, if you have class that night, obviously you can't participate this year. Maybe next year, unless you have class again or you get a job where you have to work on Halloween. Welcome to the world of employment.

Yes it is a holiday, however not a federal holiday, therefore things such as school will remain open... i bet a lot of people won't show up to class that night though if they have little ones!

Halloween is not a "holiday" it is a tradition.

And in the real world we work on days like these.

If you want out that night, then go to talk to your professor well ahead of time and see if you can complete your assignment early.

Such is life in the real world. My employees don't get Halloween off, I don't get Halloween off and the last I checked I still get mail delivery and the banks & courts are open.

While Haloween is a holiday, it is not a federal holiday and therefore, for you to presume that there would be no school is an assumption on your part..When you begin school, you get a list of days that you are off...most on the list are federal holidays, so unless they specifically say that school is out?..I would presume that you have to go to school....

why would they cancel classes at a college when school kids go to school on halloween. its no a holiday that you get off, just like st patrick's day. sometimes the teacher will try to get you out early but thats the best you can hope for.

A good college professor should allow his/her students 3-5 days off.

I believe that colleges should have no attendance standards at all- they cause the transmission of disease, and if students want to skip every class, they are welcome to pay to fail.

Oh grow up! make the best of it. your question was too long to read but if you are going to be in class dress up and bring candy if your going to be home dress up study and receive trick or treaters thats so so fun to see the little ones all dressed up. since your not a kid any more you will have to learn to have fun when you can. and I think you can do it. Have a blast decorating, invite some friends over to study with and receive the kids
