It started on Sept. 1, 1939 when Germany invaded Poland and Britan and France declared war on Germany who in turn declared war on them. It ended on about August 16, 1945 after two Atomic Bombs were dropped on Japan and they surrendered on an American War Ship. The Bombs were dropped Aug. 6 on Hiroshima and Aug. 9 on Nagasaki. It was within a week that Japan surrendered.

This depends on how far back you want to take the beginning question. The Treaty of Versailles, put such a strain on the German economy, that paved the way for the Nazi's to come to power, laying the groundwork for WW2.
The actual shooting war started in Europe with Germany's invasion of Poland, Sept 1, 1939. The end of the war n Europe was VE Day, May 8, 1945.
The war in Asia began with Japan's invasion of Manchuria in 1931, the U.S entered the war on Dec 7, 1941 and it ended on VJ Day August 14, 1945.
