Ugly Betty is the darling of the Hollywood awards scene these days. The story of an intelligent but plump clueless fashion victim making it big in the fashion industry. Isnt it hypocritical of Hollywood to celebrate the show when Hollywood itself is the epitome of skinny walking dead and Hollywood itself is an ad for anorexia?

It makes them feel better about themselves.

Just like jumping on the Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio bandwagons while driving around in Humvees and Limos and living in 10,000 square foot home complete with ponds and fountains.

I guess whatever makes you sleep better at night is really all that matters.

I admit to loving the show. The main point to the show is supposedly that a plain, not Hollywood attractive person can make it big because they are real. They have personality and care about others. This is a nice thought and why its a "feel good" show.
But you are correct, this would not probably be realistic. Then again I don't watch shows for realism.

"Hollywood" is nothing more than a big lending institution for film makers, actors and scores of others in the "biz"... it has no personality of it's own... it simply reflects what WE, as a society find entertaining and are willing to support with our dollars... so the bigger question is "why do we, as a society prefer watching and being entertained by skinny walking dead?"... Ugly Betty is actually a pleasant deviation from that norm... and may actually reflect that we're changing... for the better...

... I also appreciate that they have the pre-teen gay kid... It's great for kids like him to see SOMEBODY that reflects something about them...

all in all... it's a pretty moral show all wrapped up in sugar coated stereotypes...but people tend to learn better when they laugh than when they are preached to...

The whole point of the show is to send up "perfect" people in fashion.

If everyone looked like Ugly Betty, then there wouldn't be a premise for the show.

Yes it is. On top of that, has anybody noticed, she's really not ugly. Any guy (or girl) in a bar would be happy to strike up a conversation with her. Only in Hollywood, do they define normal looking as ugly, and then celebrate their own tolerance of it by giving each other awards for it.

I agree with you. She's a lovely young lady with brains who happens not to dress like her co-workers (thank God!!!) I'd befriend her in a heartbeat.
It just shows how shallow not only the entertainment world has become but the people who are programming the shows and some of the 12-25's as well (not all, don't roll your eyes at me children....). It's stll a good thing we can laugh at ourselves though.

I LOVE that show! Ugly Betty doesn't glamorize the fashion industry. If you've not seen the show before, give it a try, you might like it!

I've never seen the show, but in my twisted way of thinking I'm wondering about something.

Considering that nearly 40% of people in the U.S. are "obese"...should the fashion industry continue creating "plus plus" sizes i.e. accomodating the epidemic of obesity.........?

Should Hollywood promote the idea that FAT is okay?
