The Indy car name derived as the result of the genre's fundamental link to the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race (often referred to as the "Indy 500"), the best known and most-popular open-wheel auto race in North America.

Indy is the Nickname for the City of Indianapolis who held the first oval track open wheel race in the U.S. Every year the Indianapolis 500 is biggest single day spector sport in the U.S. having over 250,000 people in attendance. The IRL is short for the Indy Racing League which describes the type of racing. Usually in IRL the races are on oval tracks with open wheel cars just like the Indy 500. They do have a few road coarses but, the majority are oval. Now the CART series is different and it used to be part of the IRL but it is now its own entity. CART is short for CHAMP car or Championship racing. CART has open wheel cars also and they concentrate more on road coarses and not as many oval track set-ups. It is more like an American version of the popular F1 in Europe and South America. But, anyway, Indy is just short for Indianapolis and the type of oval track racing. OK, I hope this helps take care..

Sorry, but those are both false. The Milwaukee Mile hosted open-wheel racing long before the Indianapolis Motor Speedway did -- before the Indianapolis Motor Speedway even existed, as a matter of fact. And while the Indianapolis 500 *used* to be the largest single-day sporting event in the world, the Brickyard 400 has eclipsed Indy 500 attendance for the last several years.

It's what we Hoosiers call Indianapolis (both the city and the speedway).
