I just wish to provide a little historical background to this answer. I have a geology book published in 1949 that states measurements for approximately 4.5 billion years. Since that book was published several years after the data was collected, this means the estimate has not changed appreciably in about 60 years.
Young earth creationists like to claim that the age of the earth doubles every 10 years. Well, we can see that statement is patently false, based on the above.

The solar system stared to evolve about 4.5 billion years ago.
The material that constitutes the earth is 4.5 billion years old but the formation of the earth came some time after that.
This would make the earth something less than 4.5 billion years old.

The existance time of the earth formation (aging) is very miniscully infinitessimally very small compare to infinite existance. And life on Earth has been traced to a very short time. And the Biological life span of man can be compared to the grass and flower of the fields that are born and for one short season and then ,whither away .
