Because any of us are maniacs and idiots to someone at some point!
Traffic stresses people out of their normally more rational behavior. The fast nature of traffic can trample our cognitive expression of frustration, so in such condition insults are used instead. People just don't have the time to think out some other driver's behavioral justifications! Someone driving too fast might be in an emergency! Someone driving too slow might be having some type of car trouble or condition...etc!

That's a good question. It's just human nature. Just like how the shopping lines on either side of you seem to be going faster than yours.

The way certain people see everybody in their lives not just the ones on the road with them.
Most people need to be with people similar to them in order to feel comfortable if someone is different they feel insecure. The same rules apply to the road.
