He's a very good player for sure, but great??
He is perceived to be great because he plays for the Yankees, he has that 'captain' (which is TOTALLY USELESS in baseball).
All in all, this makes him severely over rated. When someone is perceived as great, but is, in fact, quite good.
He is perceived as a 'gold glover' and that's what people point to when talking about his defense. That and that one catch against Boston.
In fact though, he is bottom of the AL in Zone Rating and Range Factor, a lot better indication of defense than fielding percentage.
When compared to the major leagues, he is in the bottom 5.
So, would I take him (for the right price) on a team, sure I would.
Is he worth $21 million a year. Well, no one is, but he is not for sure.

brett, you keep bringing up his lack of range and a poor zone rating for this season. Well this season he is very banged up playing through a lot of injuries and is still putting up great offensive numbers. He is the most clutch hitter right now in MLB. 2 outs and a runner in scoring position and any player in the majors would vote to put Jeter at the plate, so would the statisticians. Yes he is losing his defensive prowess but I'll take him at shortstop any day of the week over any body else.
And the captain thing is NOT useless in baseball. If you played baseball at any level you would understand what role a captain takes on and off the field. Jeter is the ultimate leader he sets the tone for everyone. The fact that one of the greatest pitchers ever (Clemens) said that Jeter's performance is one of the reasons he came back this year should show you how GREAT of a player Jeter really is.

Anyone who does not realize that Jeter is a great player has very little understanding of the game and is quite possibly incapable of recognizing greatness even when it is displayed right before their eyes for 12 years.
brett666, As great as George Brett was, Derek Jeter is better.
PS $21 million in NYC is like $55,000 in KC

Jeter is one of those rare and special players that is greater much much greater than of his parts. He's a first ballot HOF inductee .He'll probably get like 97% of the vote.
In clutch situations players that aren't great want to be somewhere else and great players can't think of anywhere else that they would rather be.
If you love the game , then you have to love Derek Jeter.

Jeter is great by any measure. He is 150 hits AHEAD of Pete Rose at this stage of his career. He has a possibility of breaking the career record for runs scored.
What's amazing is that 6 of his 11 home runs this season have come against Boston!
His blast gave Joba his second win, even though the kid gave up his first run, EVER.
And of course, he caught the final out of the game last night.

That's why we call him Captain Clutch. But the reason the Yankees are going to win it all is that this year's team is full of clutch guys: Matsui, Posada, Damon, even A-Rod has turned it on when it matters most. The pitching is stabilized, the fielding is back to where it should be (although that Damon error in the 1st was really bad, but he made up for it with a great catch later)... It really is 1978 all over again. The Bronx is burning, and the Back Bay is going down in flames!

He sure is. He will more than likely get over 3000 hits. I think everyone believes that all 3000 hit club members are great. The whole range rating thing is over-rated. Does it take into effect a guys speed, height, strength of arm, how hard balls are hit....no. If you take a play in the hole...one guy may get it, one may not, but we will never know because one ball could be hit .2mph slower than the other and that .2 might be the difference, it is subjective. Yes, Jeter is a great player, end of discussion.

You can call him great, very good, over-rated, hyped - whatever you choose, it doesn't matter. He's a winner.
I am not a Yankee fan, far from it. But if Jeter retired today and I had a vote, I'd put him in the Hall of Fame.
