How did it end? The Natural with Robert Redford?

Watched this film last night but was unable to see the end. Can you tell me the significance of the woman on train and why she shot him? Glenn Close's character mentioned a son. Was Robert Redford's character the father?Where had he been during the missing 16 years?Does he pitch again? How does it all end?

It has been so long since I saw it I can't remember but I can tell you it will be back on AMC on these days and times.
