Most clubs have a family area where children are very welcome to go along and support the team (accompanied by an adult). I've never been to Reading but from what I can gather they are a friendly club and will probably have special offers for families like yourself who want to take their kids along.

Football matches are relatively safe these days as they are very well policed.
Only thing that may be a concern expect to hear alot of bad language.
Enjoy the game he will love the atmosphere

We should keep children away from blades. They might hurt themselves.
But it's OK if it's a football game. Take your child and let him enjoy watching the game.
