Have you heard someone say "the 48" or "the lower 48"? This refers to the 48 contiguous states of the USA, excluding Alaska and Hawaii.

No clear-cut answer,as you can see - already two others have given conflicting answers. It is subjective and profound (about 48 metres), but for me it is the 24th even number starting from 2, which is the first .Sorry it sounds all too complicated.
