Some facts:

In 1962, a year after the Bay of Pigs Invasion, Cuba was the center of world focus when the U.S. discovered the construction sites of Soviet nuclear missiles. The struggle that ensued between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, the Cuban Missile Crisis, brought the world the closest it ever came to nuclear war.
Over the next four decades, Castro ruled Cuba as a dictator. While some Cubans benefited from Castro's educational and land reforms, others suffered from the food shortages and lack of personal freedoms. Hundreds of thousands of Cubans have fled Cuba to live in the United States.

I encourage everyone to take some time to study the history of this tyrant.

Is this come sick, demented, underground effort to drive this country towards the same fate that encompassed the citizens of Cuba and forced hundreds of thousands of them to flee for their lives to the United States?

Do you embrace communism and look up to Fidel Castro as a hero also?

There are many who will look to Communism or Socialism as the solution to the worlds problems,no matter how many times it fails, and no matter how many ruthless dictators it spawns. Many who embrace Socialism/Communism even now seem to be of the mindset that it simply hasn't been done properly, not that it's a failed ideal. They ignore the fact that these ideas have spawned some of the most ruthless dictators ever to walk the Earth, just as they ignore the fact that these ideas have been responsible for the deaths of well over 100 million people.

As for people like Castro, those who support him,or his ideas are so deluded by the idea that Socialism/Communism are the right direction for humanity that they simply glorify the few good things that his policies have done, and ignore the rest. They are so dedicated to the cause that nothing can make them abandon it,because they "know that they can do it the right way" And of course I also think some of them think, deep down inside, that those who end up the victims of Communist leaders are not so much victims,as they are sacrifices for the greater good.

You do know,of course, that every mass murder serial killer in the prisons receives fan mail and requests from women beseeching a chance to conceive a child or a night of passionate love etc etc. Human nature! The sickos are always with us.

I think you would have a hard time ,though, among normal people to find anyone today who ¨embraces communism¨ and admires tyrants of any part of the political spectrum.

Castro(Cuba),Pinochet(Chile),
Noriega(Panama),Somoza(Nicaragua),
Rios Mont(Guatemala),
Stroessner(Paraguay). All of these were pretty despicable, each in his own nasty way and some of them, unfortunately, were hand picked by us,the U.S. Such as Castro,Pinochet,Noriega,Somoza and Rios Mont.

Of all these beauties, only Castro was a communist, the others were all of the brown beast of the lunatic- right variety. Castro has stuck it out longer than the rest. In part because of our foolish blockade policy which has only hurt our own businessmen and done nothing to loosen Castro's stranglehold on his island.

Bad as Cuba's personalised dictatorial regime has been and, though I am not denying that there were far more deaths than there ever should have been and that some refugees' lives have been in danger from the regime,it is a gross exageration to say that hundreds of thousands of Cubans fled for their lives. The truth is bad enough as it is and doesn't need to be exagerated. Thousands of Cubans have fled their island to be able to live a freer life (and why not?!!) and to be able to make a better living for themselves and their families. Many of them have RISKED their lives to do so.

At this stage of the game,I doubt you will find any sane person willing to go out on a limb for Castro. That being said,I wonder how long it will take raw capitalism to turn Cuba into a cross between Disneyland/Las Vegas/ and a brothel as soon as Castro dies? Oh,well, such is the way of all flesh. sigh....

additional note: I think ¨ash¨above has written an interesting thoughtful answer.

Nah, not me. But it's worth everyone knowing that before he ever asked for Soviet help, Castro approached the United States after he took over in Havana - and it's not like he took over from a man steeped in the democratic tradition. The US said FU so we've had a pariah off our shores now for close to 50 years.

In 1952 Castro tried out for the NY Yankees. Imagine how history might have been different had he made the team.

Sounds like someone is playing a game of "Out the Commie."

You obviously missed the point of the actual question. The user does NOT "idolize" Castro or communism in any way, but merely points out his popularity amongst the poor as opposed to the aristocracy and oligarchs that historically have oppressed the lower class. Regardless of whether socialist movements have succeeded, the idea behind them was, at the very least, to simply acknowledge the plight of the poor and working classes that has long been ignored by the wealthy elite and the regimes that have catered to their interests.

This is just another typical conservative knee-jerk reaction to something that has been intentionally misinterpreted in order to demonize another.

I read question from "Long Haired Freaky Person". While some self-deceived poor people in Cuba may naively support Castro, it is analogous to some lazy 1970's-era welfare momma cheering on the Democrats for giving her more "freebies", not realizing that welfare is a trap from which neither she, nor her children will soon escape.

Below is what I wrote to "Long Haired Freaky Person", the main point being is that Communism only ensures that practically everyone is poor. How is that for ironic?

"Che Guevarra is a cultural icon because of his capacity to provoke empathy among the spoiled youth of the affluent West. "
- written many years ago in The American Spectator.

OK, now that you've been identified and tagged, let's examine your thesis, young man. The only thing that Communist dictators (and wanna-bees) do is to ensure that practically everyone lives boring, mediocre lives of quiet desperation.

My best friend here in the Czech Republic grew up during Communism. The educational system determined he should be an auto mechanic because that is his father's profession. Luckily for my friend, Communism entered right before he was to enter High School, and when he was tested, they discovered he was brilliant. Instead of being an auto mechanic, he will certainly be a CEO, or found his own company. Instead of working on some Communist Boss' Porsche, he will own one, or maybe run the company.

Here's what happened in Communism: a lot of people naively believed they would have secure, cushy lives because everything was free. Well, if you could sleep for free every night with a skanky, $20 hooker, would you consider that such a great deal? Well, that's the equivalent of what Communism offers you.

Know anyone who is gay? Don't tell them of your love for Communist dictators, because these people were brutally treated under these regimes (and still are today in Cuba).

Have any real smart friends? The odds are, under Communism, their special abilities would not be encouraged. They'd be harshly suffocated. Communism needs lots of drones, not cowboys.

Airbrushed from History? Hell no. As Ronald Reagan observed: "I believe we are now at a turning point," "The march of freedom and democracy will leave Marxism and Leninism on the ash heap of history."

You should love that comment, because the expression "ash heap of history" was actually coined by Leo Trotsky.

How about this Reagan quote? "I believe that Communism is another sad, bizarre chapter in human history whose last pages even now are being written. I believe this because the source of our strength in the quest for human freedom is not material, but spiritual. And because it knows no limitation, it must terrify, and ultimately triumph, over those who would enslave their fellow man."

Remember, Communism was nothing more than slavery. You had the bloated Communist Party Bosses who lived like kings, forcibly depriving the rest of the populace of luxuries. Everyone worked to support them. Poor? You want to talk about poor? COMMUNISM ENSURES YOU WILL ALWAYS BE POOR!!!!

JFK should have supported the "Bay Of Pigs" he should have kicked Castro out.

All of you better read your history better, Castro let the USSR put nukes right outside of america, whats wrong with you people???

I really feel sick for any Military people when they happen by comments that are left here like this. Do you really think Mr.Bush is trying to take over the world and killing our troops for money? All your Democowards should note that Cliton let all this stew while in office and did very little to stop the growing terror. He did however close bases and freeze military upgrades, the H1 was made in the 80s people!

History cant lie, people who bow to evil loose, every place the US has won wars the people are doing great, every place we have failed they are starving and are harbors of evil people.

You cant do "nothing" and hope it all works out. At least Mr Bush did something, he had the balls, took the blame for falts not his own. He has the support of the military, the people who die for us and are dieing for freedom.

You cowards make me sick, go buy some Citco gas from Castro loved Hugo Cheves and help bring down America. Democrats will be the undoing of these United States, i'm not worried tho because after we fall apart all the Democrats dont own guns or support them so they will be cleaned up quick enough.

Read a history book!

suthrnlyts the down side of your questions is seeing all the people who write in here that don't know history, i'm sick that people like this hide behind our brave that die for our freedom, the have forgotten the cost of freedom.

I don't like ANY sort of dictatorship, Communist or otherwise, but I think that the reason why some people respect dictators like Castro and Chavez is because they at least look out to some extent for the interests of the underpriveleged in their countries. This is pretty remarkable in a world in which most governments look out only for the wealthy and don't give a damn about the poor.

Socialism and therefore communism has its appeal. Many saw (see?) communism as a remedy to the inequities in the world, a way to manage a government that brings benefit to the largest number of people, a shared responsibility for mankind. But there stands a problem with communism, even in its purist form...

The great Russian novelist Dostoyevsky pointed out this problem in a novel called Man from Underground about 150 years ago. Man is illogical. Man will not serve in others best interest, rather, but, only his own.

How does this spite communism? Well, people tend to satisfy their own needs without regard to the greater good.

Another great novel published in Russia in the 30's, Master and Margharita by Bulghokov, portrayed Russian society as colorless, drab, and uncertain. It was a novel of intellectual freedom that painted Moscow as the center of fear, sameness, and beaurocratic desire that becomes eerily petty and confined. This book is considered by Russians as the fullest depiction of communism ever published.

Centralized control has also led to the bloodiest century mankind has ever experienced, the 20th century. In Russia, Stalin ruled with an iron fist, the greater good became only Stalin's vision for his people. He became paranoid and crushed endeavors the west was moving ahead in: the sciences, arts, commercial enterprise became set on their collective heals. It was an abomination.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and, a centralized government spells out the grab for power.

Fortunately communism looks as if it has entered its last phase. Russia and China have embraced capitalism. Both nations benefit from this, and, communism seems to be, economically, a part of the 20th century that will only be lived again in reading history books!

I am not a communist. I do not embrace Castro or his ideals

However as a child I remember articles in conservative American magazines praising the noble young revolutionary leader because the government that went before him was extremely corrupt and very friendly to crime syndicate operations.

I also remember reading that Castro wanted to be neutral, to accept aid from both US and USSR, but US said no way.
This was a very long time ago.

I really really take offense at the people in Florida celebrating every time they think Castro is dying. They are lowering themselves to his level.

And we really look stupid, with economic sanctions on Cuba the tiny little communist state and favored nation status for China which is still a very powerful communist state and is sending us toys with lead paint......
