A period is what prepares the body of a lady to possibly become pregnant in the future. The whole process (including the period) is called the menstrual cycle.

If a woman doesn't have period (unless she has a medical problem caused by her period which can happen sometimes) that is a sign of something very wrong.

The age at which a period can start can be at 11 years old for some but many don't start til they are about 13 or 14.

I have a couple of sites that can give you even more information. The first is: http://www.always.com (I don't know which part of the world you are in but if in the U.S. click on the section that says "USA" in the country section and you will find information there about periods.

The second site is at: http://www.girlshealth.gov

Hi, periods happen when a girls body starts releasing eggs, it will like some blood is coming out of your vagina, they can start any age from around 10-16 and some people say that when you reach 46kg in weight is when your period starts. There is no way to prevent your period from coming, it is a natural thing that shows your body is maturing and enables you to have children. I was at my dad's house when I first got my period, I called my mum (perhaps you could call a lady friend or the school nurse) and asked her to tell him on the phone because I was too embarassed to say anything. I know how embarassing it is but in time when you are older you will realise that every woman goes through it and every man knows about it, when you have a husband you will tell him all about it too hehehe so your dad does know about them although he may not know which products to buy for you. You should start off with just a regular pad, not tampons. So just have a female that you trust on stand by so you can call them when it happens and they can explain it all to your father.
