If in the UK, I registered my phone number with TPS (telephone preference service):

http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/

Since then, I haven't received a *single* marketing call.

The service is *free*.

The answer is" May I ask who is calling please?"
If you don*t know the person or don*t want to talk to them just simply say "WE are not interested" and hang up.
Don*t give them a chance to start in on their monologue
Next; Register on the No Call List; I*m not sure how you contact them but you might try Google: No Call List
US. Government; Good Luck; Oh Yes; you do have to re register every year or so, but the time is well worth it to have the peace and quiet.

Say "Just a minute please", leave the phone off the hook and walk away. Or, when you answer those calls but don't hear anyone at the other end, press the # key 6-7 times rapidly and you won't hear from them again. Those types of calls are collecting information to determine when you're home to answer the phone. This is used by other telemarketers to contact you.

They piss me off too I'm only 13 but i answer the phone like every time it rings: Calls for free stuff, Looking for my father and for him to pay off his $7,000 he blew on the credit card but he's dead so, people keep asking for my mom then when I ask who it is they lie and say it is the bug guy or something and think it is important so I give it to her she yells at him and me then they do it again and again and again and they use me to get to talk to my mom and I have had enough! I want to shoot them or something leave us alone we will buy what we want and we aren't stupid we know what we want to buy and what we don't and the things we wouldn't buy are things from you! Good F***ing day sir! Tell them your cat ran away and tell them to hold while you get her then they will hang up on you and see how it feels to wait or say you have to use the bathroom and walk away for a second or 5 minutes and come back making fart sounds in case they stayed.

Just say 'NO' and hang up. Don't wait for their reaction. Some are recorded and if you lift the receiver you can hear them babbling on for 5 mins -that drives me insane as if I should have to make an emergency call, I can't.

If you are in the US, you can get on the "do not call list"
Otherwise just hang up the moment you hear the question.
It "feels" rude, but actually it is kinder not to take up the person's time since you are not interested in what he or she is selling.
Also...the telephone is there for your convenience and presumably you are paying for it, so don't let it run your life.

Tell them you rent your home, even if you do own after a while the calls will stop because it goes on sales data which is sold onto other companies.if its a general sales call i ask them for their home no. so i can call them on their day off, when having dinner or bathing the kids, this baffles them.!

Sign up to the telephone preference service (TPS), this will stop cold calling, and when you do receive one, ask for their telephone number and state you are signed up to the TPS and it will be they who hang up rather quickly.

Just say " Yes he/she is thankyou, and put the phone down. Or say that you will fetch them now and put the phone down and leave it there for 20 minutes. They are paying for the call remember.
