Jim's weekly pay is two thirds of Alicia's. Together they earn $600 per week. What is each person's weekly pay?

I know what the answer is, but I need to show a formula and do the work, and I don't know how.

thanks=]

We will consider Alicia's pay to be $x

& since Jim's weekly pay is two thirds of Alicia's.

Jim's pay = 2/3 of $x = $ 2x/3

Together they earn $600 per week.

So, Alicia's pay + Jim's pay = $600

$x + $2x/3 = $600

x + 2x/3 = 600

(3x + 2x) /3 = 600

5x = 600 * 3

5x = 1800

x = 1800/5

x = 360

Alicia's pay = $x = $360

& Jim's pay = $2x/3 = $240

considering the fact which you have x AND x² in the equation someplace, that could be a quadratic. you decide directly to get it in the form: ax² + bx + c = 0 So our equation is: x² - 7x + 38 = 5x + 3 We actually purely choose each and every thing on the left factor of the equation, so permit's subtract 5x on the two components: x² - 12x + 38 = 3 Now we subtract 3 on the two components: x² - 12x + 35 = 0 we've a quadratic expression wherein a = a million, b = -12, and c = 35. There are 2 elementary methods of fixing. a million) Factoring: (x - 7)(x - 5) = 0 x = 7 or 5 2) Quadratic formula x = (-b ±?(b² - 4ac)) / 2a = (12±?((-12)² + (-4)(a million)(35)) / (2*a million) =(12±?(a hundred and forty four - a hundred and forty))/2 =(12±?(4))/2 = (12+2)/2 or (12-2)/2 = 14/2 or 10/2 = 7 or 5

The total pay is $600
Let's call Jim's salary x
His pay is 2/3 of Alicia's therefore hers is 1 1/2 times his
So x + 1.5x = 600
2.5x = 600
x = 600/2.5 = 240
Jim's salary is $240 so Alicia's is 600 - 240 = $360

Both the earlier answers are of course right, but let me formulate more simply.Jim's pay is x, Alicia's y (say). Then you have two equations:
x+y =600
x=2y/3.or 3x=2y
Multiply 1st eq by 3:
3x+3y=1800.
Replace 3x by 2y
5y=1800 or y=360.
therefore x=240.
