Hi,
Sorry to say but "No" that won't work, you need to install XP on the other System before it will work. Hope this helps you.

He's right, as you do not have a legal copy of either operating system you would be breaking the law if you attempted to go online.....

as for the hard drives...just swap them over. Providing your graphics and sound are not too old, XP already contained on the drive should hold the relevant drivers. If it doesn't, then your system would be running below spec...

It's quite possible the NTFS format of the XP drive may not be accepted by the BIOS in your other PC...

Until you get yourself a legal disc, keep things as they are.

You would have to install XP on the new system. Even if you had a disc, you wouldn't be able to use it, as Windows scans for hardware changes, and you are not allowd to install the same XP on a new or significantly changed PC. Even if you had a disc, you would still have to buy a new version of XP.

you may have to identify the drivers in the system and download or transfer the drivers from the the drive you take out and reinstall on the hard drive you put in.
as I understand you have windows XP ON a partition if so when you install on your computer you may have to ring microsoft and get your XP validated for it to work on the new pc. if this is correct instructions will come up on the screen on how to validate

To ELfaGeek, what are you talking about-are you Bill Gates?
I guess you have old machines with PATA connections.
Disconnect your ME disc, fit your XP disc and try it. If it's ok Re-format your ME disc (after backing up). Change your jumper setting to slave. Might work. Trouble might be that your hardware is so different that XP wont see it, but if it's an old XP you stand a chance.

hmm no cd, could be illegal, but then dont some systems come with the software on the hard drive?

maybe he lost em, im not going to accuse some one of anything and then get points by telling them im not going to answer them.

yes this can work, as I have done it in the past with older machines.

but i tested it by having both HD in one PC and swap over the boot sequence in the bios, Press F2 i think at start up, so it boots from the HD with the other OS on it.

this should work, if it does, do the same for the other PC.

good luck.

The terms of your licence for XP allow you to upgrade the computer running XP but NOT to transfer your copy to another computer.

In any case, you would probably run into a series of hardware compatibility problems, not to mention Windows activation.

Yes, you can plug the hard drive as a secondary or slave device with the other hard drive as primary. It will boot off the primary and the system should see the other hard drive and you can transfer files. This is assuming that both drives are IDE. If the newer computer has sata drive you should still be able to plug the old drive into the IDE slot and set the bios to boot off the sata drive first. If it is the newer hard drive and it is sata you may not be able to put it into the computer. In this case I would put the IDE hard drive and set the bios to boot from the IDE first. Hope this helps.

The OS goes with the PC, and cannot be used on another PC legally. It can be copied to disk with an ISO recording program.

let us not judge too quickly, the cd might just be lost or missing, not necessarily a pirated software. unfortunately though, for the drivers to properly work you need to install the os first. you can however try and see if it would work. some will while some won't. just make sure to install the drivers from the driver cds or download them from the manufacturers if ever it works out.
