When you start the computer and get to a normal desktop press CTRL ALT DEL all at the same time. That should open up the "Task Manager". Look and note what is listed in the applications window. Use the machine for a while and do the same, again noting what is listed there. IF you know what actions you need to take to freeze the computer, do the same, and again press CTRL ALT DEL to see what is running, but before you freeze the machine.

The most likely cause is one or more of the programs running in the background are conflicting and locking up the machine. You can "End Task" on the various applications to see if removing them from memory resolves the problem.

Did this problem start recently after you installed a new program or piece of hardware? If so, remove it and reinstall the drivers/software and see if that resolves the issue.

If your computer is under warrantee, talk to the warrantee people. It's very hard to tell what's going on from your description, but you may be overheating. Turn it off, unplug it, open the case, and brush out all the dust bunnies. Do not use a vacuum cleaner. Canned air is helpful for dust removal.
