Sundance and Cannes are the two most well known. Independents go after a place in Sundance, more established go after a place in Cannes.

There's a book called "Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide".
It's a book with all the film festivals around the world, it comes with their respective dates, how can you submit your movies, the award categories, etc. Hope it's helpful.
