so A=.04-.4=-.36

That's not too bad. If you would just subtract 0.4 on both sides, that would look like

a + 0.4 - 0.4 = 0.04 - 0.4
a = -0.36

Of course, I'm presuming that this is just simple algebra and integer operations.

When 0.4 moves to the opposite , it becomes negative, so it become -0.4.When a number is positive,it becomes negative when it is move to the opposite.When a number is negative,it becomes positive when it is move to the opposite.
