I have often heard the phrase "the word is spelled" and on the other hand the phrase " you spelt that word wrong".
In this day and age where the English language is continually being altered it would seem that both spellings and pronunciations are acceptable.
Being Scottish with a somewhat dubious grasp of the English language and no Celt language in me at all I would prefer the most appropriate spelling and pronunciation spelt.

They are the same word, meaning the same thing but spelled/spelt differently.
Only people who have no knowledge of what the rest of the world is doing regarding the English language will dispute this fact.
Next thing they'll be telling me that the words colour and behaviour have no "u" in them.
spell (spěl) Pronunciation Key
v. spelled or spelt (spělt), spell·ing, spells
v. tr.
To name or write in order the letters constituting (a word or part of a word).

The past tense and past participle of spell (only in the word-related sense) can be either irregular (spelt) or regular (spelled).
British English allows both irregular and regular forms. In American English, the irregular forms are never or hardly ever used.

Spelt is also a kind of wheat.
But as a verb, either spelt or spelled is acceptable, although spelled is the more common form, at least in the U.S.

Regardless of the spelling of the word "grammar", "spelled" vs "spelt" is not an issue of grammar. A grammar is a description of a language which may be used via pattern matching to determine whether a phrase (or larger unit) is or is not legally part of the language which is described by the grammar in question.
Determining the correctness of spelling, on the other hand, involves the ability to break such phrases apart into tokens that exactly match words that are legal in the given language. In some languages, whether or not such a match exists may depend upon the context in which it is used. When that happens, syntax validity may be considered to be dependent upon language semantics.

Spelt is the past tense of spell in the same way that learnt is the past tense of learn. In the US they need things to be more simple so they have tried to eradicate the wonderful anomalies in the ENGLISH language. As a result, spelled and learned have become generally accepted.

Northern Ireland *** reporting in, perhaps it is a a "Ulster -Scots" slang, but a lot of us used the word "SPELT"
I recall in Primary 5 or 6 that it was one of the spellings on the list for homework and same meaning as SPELLING.
