While driving a manual transmission vehicle in stop and go traffic, is it better to continually shift from first to neutral, or to just hold the clutch and brake during stoppages?

It would depend on how long you are planning on sitting still. It also depends on how strong your leg muscles are. If it is more than a couple of minutes then I'll just put it in neutral and shift into first when I'm ready to go. The longer that I'm in traffic the more I'll do it. It isn't a big deal either way, so whatever mood you are in, go with it.

good luck.

It won't hurt to keep the clutch in if you are continually rolling forward and stopping every few metres, but if you fan or ride the clutch like some people you might find your clutch will wear a lot faster than it normally should!

If you are at the lights and you know it will be a while before the change I would disengage the clutch and leave it in neutral as opposed to having to weight the clutch pedal!

It doesn't make a big difference which you do. I suppose there would be a little less work on the clutch, clutch master and slave cylinders and the pedal, not to mention your leg, if you put it in neutral and let off the clutch. But in reality, it doesn't make much of a difference. Do what you're comfortable with.

give your leg a break and just shift into neutral.. sometimes in stop and go traffic your mind starts to wander and then you forget about holding the clutch in and then WHAMMO you've just introduced yourself to the car in front of you.

depends how long you'll be still. if you hold your clutch in too long, you'll prematurely wear out your throw-out bearing.
