Pleae teach me which is correct, (1) or (2). Is "of" necessary?

The first is correct. The "of" isn't needed as this "50 meters wide" is an adjective phrase and does not need to be linked to the modified noun with a preposition. You could rearrange the words to get "a 50 meter wide road" also. Note the dropped "s" in "meters" as this is now acting as an adjective and, therefore, needs to be singular.

YOU COULD EVEN SAY " MY TOWN HAS A ROAD , THAT IS 50 METERS WIDE".
