It depends on the type of sculpture you want to make. If it large you will need a paper or wire armature underneath to support the clay as you build. The best sculpture clay is a high grog clay ( this means lots of grit in it).Any clay supplier will give you the right one.Your hands are the main tools you need for clay sculpture though old knives and sometimes spoons can help too.
If you are making small sculptures (up to 6") you could use air drying clay so you don't need to fire it.Also you could think about using any type of plasticine, this can be finely detailed with tools like knives, satay sticks and empty pens and comes multicolored but stays soft forever so is used for exhibiting/assessing but does not last forever if people touch it.
Good luck and happy sculpting

Types Of Clay For Sculpting

Clays that are used for sculpture are varied. Ceramic clays can be used but will have to be kept from drying out before you finish working on the piece, and then fired when finished for durability. Oil based clays are used for sculpting, there isn't any concern for them drying out while working on them but should be kept covered to keep away dirt and dust. Oil based clays are NOT fired and are usually the first step toward producing a mold to then use to translate the form into some other more durable material such as ceramic clay, metal(via wax casting), cement or even fibergalass and papier mache.

You said that your are a student. Go to the ceramic department and ask questions about their classes and their policy about clay and firing.

I was taking sculpture classes from one instructor that has a special formula of clay mixed.

I am taking a ceramic class this instructor has a different formula of clay mixed. This instructor hates the clay the sculpture instructor uses and wants that kept out of the class kilns

I can sculpt in the class and have it fired if I use the correct clay.

Ask what the policies are if you want to have your piece fired.

Some more info in case you're interested (not sure what kind of project you have in mind): for really small sculpts (1" and smaller) you can use artificial clays like polymer clay (FIMO etc.) or Epoxy putties (kneadatite, magic sculpt). These need minimal tools and equipment.
