Things get very quiet... In most cases the car will coast to a stop, as the cv joint is the drive connection to the front wheels & the coupling falls apart. It only takes one side to fail for the car to stop.

If the c.v joints "go" on you whilst driving, there are several "naugthy", outcomes, you'll either, lose control, crash, come to a drastic grinding halt, damage your suspension, fracture brake lines/bearings,the shaft itself, possably damage the gearbox, rip out mountings etc, (depending on speed), the list goes on, perhaps not all of this will happen, just one or two single items, it's difficult to tell. DEFINATELY, get it checked out, you could invovle others in an accident. If you should hear it "going" while driving, Hit the breaks, hold on tight, and pray?

I just replaced the passenger side axle in my sisters 97 accord. She drove around for two years on this axle which clacked and made all kinds of noise. The odds of a complete axle failure are frickin slim. As a repairman Ive seen axles come in so beat up that you wonder how they drove it there. Axle failure is not instantanious. Your vehicle will begin to pull in one direction when they are bad. If one were to give out you would have plenty of notice.

If they go out, then most likely you'll lose power to the drive wheels and be stranded. At worst case, it may cause the wheel to lock up.
If you suspect a problem, then have it cheked out and repaired.
