Am I alone in severely disliking the way tv news broadcasts have changed, including the BBC and ITV? I can't stand all the exaggeration and opinion that gets into the headline reports these days. Those who write the autocue scripts seem to think they are constructing plots for EastEnders.
Does anyone else think that the stories covered are getting dafter, too? In 2003, Sky interrupted their regular schedule with the "urgent breaking news" that former footballer George Best had been sat in a pub for a few hours one afternoon...unsurprising, as he had an alcohol habit for over 30 years. They sent out a crew of reporters and broadcast live from outside the pub. I kid you not.
Just simply read the news, newscasters, you are not Jeremy Sodding Kyle.
Anyone with me? What say you?

Oh, thank God! I thought it was just me getting old (I'm 29).
Also - WHY oh why do the ITV news presenters stand like horses in a stable instead of sitting down like they used to? Do the pruducers think that this makes them look involved and active? Actually, it just means that we see their odd socks and awful attire.

ms fortunes old man - The word "autocue", which was originally a trademark name, features in the Oxford English Dictionary and is commonly used. It has been a UK generic term for what is known as a 'teleprompter' in the States for a long time. I therefore suggest that you are the one who ought to ''speak English".
Thanks for the Beavis and Butthead thing, though.

I totally agree with you, I also despair with all the waffle and opinions of so called experts. They should just report the facts and leave speculation to the red tops. Also why do we need to have outside broadcasts. some wally stood outside the Home Office at 10 o'clock of a night when they are CLOSED!!

Saturation TV, it's the same with every programme, News, Soaps, whatever, all competing with each other, filling in unnecessary time with a load of bullsh*t, Soaps for example are now on so much the script writers have run out of ideas, I can't watch TV anymore because it's so dumbed down in the pursuit of profit, they pander to the lowest common denominator, I just sit at my PC in my spare time now, but even though it can be infuriating at times it's still great entertainment.

I agree totally. If you watch the news at 6pm and then at 10pm on the BBC very often the original 'facts'have been lost somewhere in the excitement of getting an exclusive. Balanced reporting has gone completely with no reasearch being done on many news articles. They are now just 'stories' it is like watching an extended version of jackanory.
Sky is also crap, it's the 'Sun' in drag!

I agree with you 100% and furthermore, the uneducated enunciation and poor grammar exhibited by the presenters is atrocious as well.
EDIT: Do we have to have the manic drumming right the way through news broadcasts. It drives me nuts and is most distracting to the point where it sometimes drowns out what is being said.

Yes, it came from America, where else?
I have seen it creeping in here too, newsreaders who do a little acting as they read off the autocue.
It amazes me, these snotty nosed little idiots who come out of uni with their media studies degree, get a job with the BBC and say, you know what we really need to do? well, lets not just read the news, lets put some emotion in it too .. its what they do in America, so its a great idea. lets use the word awesome, issues and solution every second word too.

Nowadays they seek to make the news rather than report it!!!
The BBC is seen as very biased both at home and abroad. What a tragedy when it was the flagship for open, honest and fair news only a decade ago!!!!

100% - it seems like broadcasters want to turn the whole of television into cheap reality TV shows!!
The other thing that really annoys me is that childrens TV presenters don't speak properly anymore - I know kids have to relate to the presenter but adults don't understand what kids are saying anymore!!

Blame America!! Yea, were horrible. Since the 17th century when England migrated to the New Americas, we've been culturally assimilating our ways onto other ethnic groups over time. Pretty soon, ok maybe not that soon, England will be a democracy and there'll be no point in visiting London because it would just be USA part 2.
