With the information you have given us, there is no possibl way we can give you all of the possible answers. there are often over 100 different reasons why the Check engine light would be coming on. You need to get a code reader and extract the codes from the computer. This is the only way to truely know and same time. Other wise you will spend hours hunting everything down. You also never supplied us with a year make and model of the car. As the computer systems have changed over the years so have the codes and the possibile solutions. On an OBD II system you can have up to 1000 error codes. So give us more information next time ok. Thanks.

Disconnect the negative terminal to your battery for 15 seconds to reset the ECM. If your SES light comes on again, drive the car to a parts house or mechanics shop and get a code readout to tell you where the problem(s) are.

Take it to a mechanic shop. They can decode the service code... it may be a simple as a loose gas cap, or as complex as you can imagine. You can also get a hand held device that will tell you what error code is making the light come on.

I've heard that something like having the gas cap off/loose can set it off, then needs to be "re-set". Do you have a Ford by any chance? We drive Crown Vic's at work and our repair guys say Fords are notorious for that happening. Not much, but a couple of possibilities.....

many new cars have the light come on to remind you to do simple maintenance. Does mean there is a serious problem. Your mechanic should reset the like when you get your oil changed and anything else done.

Take it in to an auto parts store like Autozone and have the error code read. Then you'll have direction into fixing the problem.

Whatever it is, don't ignore it. I did once and my engine desroyed itself somewhere between nowhere and nowhere else in the Central Valley of California. As in, BOOM. And as in stranded.
