I'm volunteering at a rest home and I need some good ideas to get the people there involved, because they often will just sit and watch whatever activities we do and not get enthused.

If you have grandchildren I would suggest taking up scrapbooking. You absolutely can NOT do it wrong and you will enjoy not only the scrapbook building aspect of it but the photo taking aspect as well!
Also, if you have lots of old family photos scrapbooking them and adding information on who is who, when and where the photos were taken and on what occasion (if applicable) is a great way to pass down your lineage to your children and their childeren etc ...
I recently started working with my 77 year old Mother on building a scrapbook from photos that were all taken well before I was ever born. It's been great to be able to document who everyone is, how they are related to us and the geographics involved from one move to the next.
Another great craft I enjoy doing is making no-sew throws. They are incredibly easy to make and are fairly inexpensive. (A 4ft by 6ft throw can be made for around $15.00) They make great gifts for family and friends, and you can choose from an endless supply of patterns for special occasions, seasons, and/or gender!

I'm not sure that those living at rest homes would have lots of old photos for making scrapbooks, etc., but they might... some also might not have involved families or it might be a delicate issue.
You might want to check out this page at my site for various ideas that can be done by seniors and/or those with physical disabilities.
My site is primarily about (polymer) clay, but that particular page has non-clay stuff too, and even some links you could check out for lots more ideas (...and/or you could also use paper clay or bread clay or paper mash instead, for some of clay ideas).

HTH, and good luck...worthwhile thing to do!

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/QzmLp
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

This is one of the best collection of plans I’ve seen: https://tr.im/sMQb6
There is enough variety of projects in here, big and small, intricate and simple, and you can pick out new ones as you progress in your woodworking abilities.
It’s a great feeling knowing you made something by hand. It’s always fun to show off your craftsmanship, and ladies love it too!

Card making and scrapbooking. They would enjoy rubber stamps, decorative edge scissors, pretty markers, punches, as these weren't around when they were young.
