There are nine verses covering events in his life and the loss of innocence and religion and other topics.

It is a history of rock & roll from the death of Buddy Holy, Richie Valens & the Big Bopper through the late sixties. Ends around the time of Altamont.

A line by line analysis would take a whole page, but you can find many sites that do that.

Don McLean has refused to explain the lyrics, apart from admitting that the first part is about Buddy Holly (the album was dedicated to Buddy Holly)

The song is also an allegory about the loss of innocence..

It starts out with how he found out that Buddy Holly had been killed in a plane crash and then goes on to sum up the history of rock music up until the early 1970s. There are religious references and it talks about a loss of innocence. In my opinion, Madonna absolutely ruined this song with her crappy cover of it. I can't believe her ego is so huge that she thought she could pull it off by leaving out about half the song and making it meaningless and pointless.
