Whether you move to San ANtonio or not is purely your decision. True, the city is larger and overall there are more jobs. You do not mention any type of employment that would help guide you in that respect.

As far as transportation. Ffperki is correct, salt will destroy a car and any significant time at the coast will start even the best maintained cars rusting.

Wait until you are in San Antonio to get a car. There are more for sale here as the city is larger. You may find that you do not need a car immediately as the public transportation is adequate here for most people. Then you could save your money and buy a car when you find one.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Only you can decide whether you are coming to San Antonio or not, I have been to the coast and frankly I like it a lot but I would rather live here in San Antonio. I would wait until I moved here to buy a car, and do my best to find out if the car that I buy here has been at the coast or not for extended periods of time. If it has I wouldn't buy it. My parents lived on the coast and the vehicles there have a lot of rust on them from the salt even new cars show signs of rusting. Salt is insidious You park near the dock and go fishing for a few hours and came back and the car is covered with salt, you can try to wash it out and may do a pretty good job but there is always some left.

I lived on the coast for 3 teenage years and 4 years during my 20's. It is a beautiful area near Padre, Port A and Rockport and very relaxing. Not really for young folk unless you enjoy surfing and chilling. I never had any problems with my cars, but I took care of them. I had them waxed and undercoated and every week or sometimes daily or every beach trip, I had them washed first undercarriage and then the car. Waxing is really important and undercoating once a year. I had used but not old cars. Never had any problems. I loved four wheeling on the beach areas where it was allowed. Fun! One of the 6 colleges I attended and received degrees was at the Island University, Texas A&M Corpus Christi. They have busses in CC also. Never needed a car, but you can get one just take care of it. Great job for a marine biologist and tow trucker. Fisherman or anything to do with those who retire (older folks). There are some really nice homes for reasonable prices in the more historic areas near Ocean dr.

Do whatever you think is practical for you to do. If you think that getting the car when you have gone to SA is right then do that but if you think get the car before then get it before. That is your choice. Good Luck.

Enlist in the Air Force. Then you won't need to worry about room/board/transportation.
