Ya know, it can be. With the wrong person ridding and the wrong person training. I have seen some miserable horses running barrels and if the owners knew anything then they would go home and feed them before even getting on! Then IMHO those horses that wring their tails when they run, to me that is abuse and very horrible to look at. Yes, there are people in my area that do that. Can't understand that for the life of me!!
Abuse is a fine line in what one person thinks to the next.
PETA people are just freaks anyways so I would tell that guy to go jump in a lake full of alligators!
BUT for the most part we do not abuse our barrel horses, give me a friggin break! On second thought, send that guy my way and I'll take care of him!! geeze

I do not think barrel racing your horse is abusive at all. The only thing I do not like about it is when the girls are coming home from 3rd barrel and whip and kick the crap out of their horses to get home. If you have a well trained barrel horse they know they have to do the run fast. Horses are not dumb if they are trained right they will know what to do with out being whipped or kicked. I am glad to hear that you dont. I dont sit at a rodeo and think oh jeez their being so mean the poor horse. The horse loves what its doing. i just dont like to see a horse being whipped if it doesnt need to be. Those peta people have way to much time on their hands. They dont know any thing. They probably have never been on a farm or any thing. If they want some thing the petition about they should come see are electric cattle prod. That would drive them nuts I bet.

No, I don't think barrel racing is abusive.
Some (ok, many or even most) of the PETA fanatics believe merely riding a horse is abusive. So consider the source.
Do I think there are abusive racers? Sure, just like any other discipline. I also have the obnoxious opinion that aggressive competition and the training required for it is very hard on a young horse with open joint capsules. That could fit some peoples' definition of abuse.

No, barrel racing is not at all abusive, if you are taking care of your horse, they wear protective gear, are properly trained, then they are fine! I mean, basically any horse-back riding sport can be considered absive by Peta, I was at a H/J show last weekend with my trainer's pony, and a lady from Peta kept following me around saying I was a horrible horse owner for hitting my horse with the crop once more him almost rearing me off!
You seem to take very good care of your horses! Good job. =]

No matter what you do with horses or any animal for that matter, there will always be those who see what we do as abuse. Without the horse, this country and many others would be way behind the times... how did we move west?? We did it through using horses. How did we move mail, products, plow our fields, remove logs from the forests to build our houses, take our families to church, get a doctor to a sick person, This country was built on horse power. You know if you are abusing your horse... 200 years ago there were no cars, trains, buses or airplanes. People who take the time to have a horse usually bond and love their horses. Why else would we spend tons of money to have them. I could be vacationing in Hawaii every year with the money I spend on my horses. I have a team of belgians that love their job. They couldn't be happier pulling a sleigh, cart or wagon. I use very mild snaffles and they tuck their heads down and in and off they go. They love to see me coming with their ration of hay or an apple or carrot. They get curried everyday and stand without being tied for it.. So, I guess there is a place for PETA because there is abuse that does go on and we definately need our advocates... However, they are ignorant and don't understand the love that most people hold for their equine buddies.. So, if you know in your heart that you are not abusing your horse, then you probably are not... Do what your heart tells you to do. One would discipline a child for disrespect right??? There are those, however, that do abuse children too.... so, you decide... If your horse greets you and is happy to see you.. then you are doing your job.. I know some people will disagree with this response, but that's OK.. I know that I do not abuse my horses..
Good luck

OMG! Yes barrel racing is SO abusive! You would NEVER see a horse RUNNING around trees or each other in the wild! In the wild all animals are invincible to all things (i.e. drought, starvation, predators) so that is why all animals should live free!
WHAT A JOKE! My horse is lame and if PETA had a say in it she'd be in the wild probably dead already because she would be easy pray.
I used to barrel race and yes there are SOME people in that sport that do abuse their horses (just like with every other sport) but on the whole, barrel racing is NOT ABUSE! Most of those horses get better care than I do! Lucky them! :-)

I can think of very few equestrian sports that are in and of themselves abusive, and the ones that I can are the most extreme (horse tripping, suicide races, etc). Most equestrian competitions are designed to show a horse's natural abilities and the training of both rider and horse. If the horse is fit, is cared for properly and all safety precautions are taken to prevent injury, then it is not abusive.
I give the folks at PETA some credit in that they do help to bring focus to real abuse, but then sometimes go off the mark and this is one of them. Some of the more extreme elements think that any use of an animal for sport or entertainment and even owning pets should be prohibited. Most competative riders I know put the wellbeing of their horse first and foremost. You sound like you give your animal exceptionally good care, so don't worry about some of these protesters say. Just keep taking good care of your horse.

hahahaha... crazy PETA people!
I'd swap lives with my barrel racers any day of the week! They live a better life than I do. And they love to run. You'll find many good barrel horses love the pattern, and I have seen some before that will run it riderless.
Now I'm not saying there arn't people out there who abuse their horses and barrel race, but don't classify an entire sport as being bad. There's bad horse owners in every sport, just like their are bad parents in every town.
dang PETA morons!

My wife and own three horses 2 are her barrel horses and i use mine for every thing ,that said most barrel racers pamper their horse give them only thr best in feed care and love I can tell you that our horses are family and if they get sick or hurt the vet is called asap and sometimes that's not cheap I think you should tell PETA to pound sand There are misconceptions about hack mores sometime they can be more severe than say a snaffle or simple curved bit we use both an i am not a big fan of some hack mores but my wife is its a preference

Its not abusive at all as long as you have the right person riding the horse. Everybody in my gymkhana association treats their horse properly well except for maybe one person who beats her horse to run =(. The peta people probably saw something like that one time and now they think everybody does it that way. The unfortuante thing about peta is that they are such radicals and take one rare occurence out of context. My horses love barrel racing. They look forward to going to the shows and running. I always put boots on my horses because I dont want them to hurt themselves. When I eneter the gate to start my pattern my horses dance because they want to go.
