|x + 1| = 4
x + 1 = 4
x = 3
or
x + 1 = - 4
x = - 5

x = - 5 , x = 3

Question 2
|y - 1| = 7
y - 1 = 7
y = 8
or
y - 1 = - 7
y = - 6

y = - 6 , y = 8

|x + 1| = 4
=> x + 1 = 4 or x + 1 = - 4
=> x = 3 or - 5

Same way for |y - 1| = 7

the absolute value of something would always be both positive and negative.

|x+1|=4 so that would be...
|x+1|= 4 AND |x+1|= -4
the solve for x.
x+1 =4 and x+1=-4
the x would equal...
x= 3 and x= -5

do the same thing for y. good luck. =]
